What to expect in a school life shoujo manga (female characters)

Hey! This is GothicJazz31 again. I'm sure if you have read more than 3 shoujo manga with settings based on school life, you would have been able to identify a pattern. It's pretty clear most of the time and sometimes the plot line is also predictable. However this does not stop shoujo manga readers, instead it's because of this predictability be it the journey of her love or the moments where you squel "Awww they look so cute" and many other factors that keeps us hooked on it. (at least me) Like it hate it, today I'm sharing with you what to expect from characters in a mainstream shoujo manga.

WARNING! This is just my opinion and to be fair not all shoujo manga are like that (most) so just enjoy the journey and take this as a pinch of salt! :)

This post will be about the female characters, because they are usually the main ones.

1. Annoyingly naive

Okay there's always this one female protagonist that gets on our nerves. In a typical shoujo manga forum there's always this group of people commenting, "God! She's so stupid.", "I can't stand her!", "She's too dumb to be with X!", etc. Most of the time this character is not perceptive neither is she intelligent.  She is usually in love with someone but is too dumb to realise that someone else is in love with her or that her love is reciprocated. Often times, she will hurt the feelings of others because she of her insensitivity. But there are good points to such a character; when her friend betrays her she will forgive that person because she has an extremely kind heart. She may be a little insensitive but when she realises something is wrong she will be a concerned friend. So in all, she's sweet but too naive

2. Maturely Immature

This character is very mature. Sometimes she may have a sad backstory which includes neglected family or because she has too many siblings to take care of. As a result, she becomes very independent and sometimes she even thinks she is superior than the others around her. This female character can be extremely intelligent or a very determined character. However when she falls in love, all hell breaks lose and she often becomes a blushing bride and to some extent reverting back to your typical shoujo stereotype. Sometimes because of her independence, she may be harsh but on the inside she means well. She is usually mistaken as cold, harsh or scary but really as time progresses other characters start to get to know her better and accept her. Often such characters are relatively quite popular because it shows some form of depth in the character rather than the annoyingly naive one. (Again that's my opinion)

3. Cinderella

Who doesn't love a good Cinderella story, plain girl who feels that no one ever will fall in love and she hopelessly pins onto a guy. An unrequited love but guess what an extremely unnecessarily handsome/ cute guy starts to notice her...and so begins her road to romance. Yes as the title states it's very straightforward. This character is normally down-to-earth very kind, sweet and friendly but the only problem is that she is too plain-looking/ ugly. There are manga who give her a makeover so that she looks ridiculously pretty and then proceed to capture her crush's attention while other manga play the "I just love your inner beauty" road. Of course there's also the storyline where she's constantly overshadowed by her sister or friend who is way more popular/ prettier than her but sometimes hastier too. (Who doesn't love a good catfight)

4. Am I a girl/ boy

If you're thinking of gender bender then...you're not entirely wrong. This can mean literally or metaphorically. The female character can be dressed up as a boy for several reasons like being mistaken as one, trying to get into a boy's school, etc. But it can also mean that she is very boyish in nature. She is usually seen to be very close to guys or to the point that guys fear her. In some cases she can fight well or is just plain rowdy. However she has always wanted to be girly and fall in love (most of the times) and is seeking out for compatible partners. Because she has always been mistaken as a guy hence usually at the start of the manga it shows her changing her whole appearance and disassociating herself from her past "identity".

5. Notice me sempai

Instead of your bubbly or cold female heroine readers are introduced to an overwhelmingly depressing and guilty heroine. Often, this character faced a tragic event or constant bullying before hence she changes into this quiet and isolated  person. Her thoughts can be very depressing to the point that she starts to affect everyone else around her. She always thinks she's not good enough or distances herself from others so that she won't feel abandoned again. Notice me sempai characters can also be wallflowers in general, she may have a normal family but is just generally quiet and shy. This then begins the journey of a sweet girl and her painful blossoming romance. The manga will usually allow the character to progress into someone slightly more optimistic and even start to open to people around her. Do note that this is different from the Cinderella type, although some traits matches.

These are the top 5 commonly known female character in shoujo manga, at least to me.You have to understand there are many other types of characters and even some of them cannot be easily be categorized because of their unique traits and personalities. Hope that you enjoy reading it and stay tuned for my other updates! Let me know if  I've missed out on any other types. Till then!

What Summer Anime (2016) I Am Looking Forward To

Hey All!

This is GothicJazz again. Recently, the anime released in Spring 2016 most of them were meh. There were some that I enjoyed but really none got me super addicted. I have not watched all of the Spring anime and there are a few that I am keen on watching later. Having said this, Summer 2016 anime seems quite promising. There are few that I'm quite hyped about.

1. D-Gray Man Hallow

I can't even describe my hype for this anime! If you've read my introduction before, you would have realise I am a huge HUGE D-Gray Man fan! Long long ago, there has been rumours that D-Gray Man will be renewing after the abrupt end from the previous anime. Of course, there was no legitimate news of renewing the anime. I can't remember when it was revealed (2015?) but i came across this news that they will be renewing it! I also watched the teaser trailer. Okay, the art style changed quite a bit but seeing the characters come together especially Allen Walker (screams internally) it brings so much nostalgia! I really really cannot wait for this anime to come out on 5th of July (Regular broadcast).

2. Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen - Mirai-hen

The art style of this anime has always been very interesting (blood that is not red?). It has a very colourful palette and the plot is quite clever. After watching season 1,  I am quite excited to watch this anime. I'm not so sure about what happened to season 2, I saw some news that it was initially planned but instead they when ahead with 3? It seems to me like a Sherlock Holmes type anime complimented exaggerated deaths similar to Final Destination. Episode 1 will be on July 11th.

3. Orange

I've read the manga before so the plot is quite familiar to me. But still I'm quite interested if the anime will go accordingly or will divert away. What makes me interested is because of the feels I had when I read the manga. It has this very sweet plot where the heroine receives a letter that she will write 10 years later in the future. The contents depict how she was not able to prevent the death of her friend (the new transfer student). The theme of "causes and consequences" makes this anime stand out a bit more and i really look forward to it. First episode is on 4th of July.

Here are the 3 anime I am looking forward to for the summer! Hope you all enjoyed it and feel free to share your summer picks. :)

Getting to know me better (My journey with Anime/ Manga)

Hi, this is GothicJazz31 speaking again! This blog will be about my journey in the awesome world of anime/manga. I'm sure many people may have started watching anime first because of Pokemon/ Dragon Ball Z/ Inuyasha, etc. So if you are not interested in my story you can skip this and stay tuned for my first "serious" review of manga/anime.

My earliest memory of watching anime is Digimon at some channel and it's not even the first episode. At that time I don't even know what's an anime! But I was captivated by the art and the action after that one episode even though I didn't know what the hell was going on. I went to a CD shop and bought two discs (because the cover was so pretty XD) one with the cover of Lilymon and another Angewomon. Then to my horror when i watched the show it was in the middle of nowhere. Though I was confused, I still enjoyed it a lot.

My next anime was Zatch Bell, Kirby and Pokemon on KidsCentral. But like Digimon, I did not really follow up on any of them after that. My cousins then were very into the Gundam series so I may have watched a bit. (It may offend some but i wasn't really into the hype though).

The very first time I knew what an anime was when i watched D-Gray man on Okto channel.

I was probably 10 years old. Like Digimon, my first impression was episode 9 (the one where they met Miranda Lotto). after that episode I really really loved it! I was hooked. Every week, same day, same time I would plant myself on the sofa and watched it. It was my first anime that i faithfully watched till the end. After some googling that's when i came across the word "Anime". Suddenly it was like this "Eureka" moment and i started to recall all the other half-watched anime that I really love. I would say D-Gray Man was my first love, my trigger to really getting into the anime world.

The second faithful anime was Sakura Card Captor introduced by my cousin when I visited her. We binge watched Sakura season 1 and 2.

Okay, it was very interesting but too girly for me. I love the tarot cards and everything but it was a bit too much sometimes. But without Sakura i would not have known about Clamp and the other wonderful anime/manga they provided. So, Sakura is quite significant in my life, even if i never watched it a second time.

Probably when I was 11 i started to watch Vampire Knight.

It was my 3rd faithful anime and that is also when i started buying manga. My love for Vampire Knight was so strong that at that point of time i could only find their Chinese translated version and i bought them even if my traditional Chinese is/was weak. I was hooked to the series and even after the finale I proceeded to read the manga online until somewhere when I started to get a little frustrated with the plot. (that is for another time to share) After Vampire Knight, I pretty much started to binge watch anime and read tons of manga online. I call it my "obsession" period. Whenever I was online you can expect me to be reading manga or watching anime. I even went out to buy manga I have already read online, rent Anime Cds, buy anime CDs even if I have already rented it or seen it online. It was so so crazy but there was this thrill that was so damn addictive that I couldn't stop. I had so many different phases and preferences for certain types of anime that I just lost count. Since then, i have never stopped loving anime/manga.

Fast forward to today, Ta-da! There you have it, the introduction to my journey with Anime/Manga. Hope that you enjoy reading and of course I welcome all to share your journey as well!

Till next time.

Introduction of GothicJazz31

Hi all, this is GothicJazz31 speaking.  This is a new project for me and i'm really a newbie at this sort of stuff so bear with me. I love reading and watching movies and television series. I'm sure there are plenty of similar blogs about manga and anime around but hey, I just want to spread to love around. In actual fact not many of my friends actually are a fan of manga or anime so this is just a cool platform for me to talk about one of my passion! :) For me, I'm really into not all, but quite a wide range of genres. I may be no expert but i can offer you my personal (subjective) opinions about a certain manga/ anime.

Hope we can have fun together from this adventure!
